The Gist: Descourtilz, a french naturalist, gives her perspective on the beginning stages of the Haitian revolt. His account includes the actions of the rebelling slaves and how they set fire to the sugarcane and killed their masters. According to Descourtilz the city of Le Cap was in a state of fear, as the French ran out of burning buildings and for their lives. The petit Blancs began fighting back and killing the blacks. It was also said that all the blacks and mixed were fighting the French (white) on the island.
Declaration of Rights of Man Summary: The French came up with a declaration of rights of man. In this declaration the ideas of liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression were focused upon. Although, equality was a major idea in the declaration, events in the Haitian Revolution did not demonstrate these ideas and laws being enforced for "man" and "citizens" in the colony.
Haiti was one of Frances greatest exports. The U.S. probably relied on the goods shipped to and from the island. Perhaps in fear of losing a trading relationship with France, the U.S. decided to not get involved in the issues going on between France and its Colony. Also at the time France was very powerful, and in order to keep a friendly relationship and avoid a war, the U.S. chose on to get involved.
